Candidate Experience: The important differentiator
The reputation of recruiting is unfortunately rather bad. The practices are known to be slow, outdated, and unfriendly to candidates. Organisations start to realise that this can’t go on like this. That is why a positive candidate experience was and will be the greatest differentiator.
In 2018, the mindset of seeing candidates as a consumer will further take hold. Just like today’s consumers, job seekers want real-time updates and easily accessible information about their job applications.
Technologies such as chatbot that take care of interview scheduling, preparations and the first questions of a candidate are only one way of improving the candidate experience.

Social Recruiting: The recruitment game changer
One of the biggest recruiting trends over the last decade has been the rise of Social Media to attract, convert and maintain talent. The buzz term ‘Social Recruiting’ will most likely also stick around in 2018. The three major recruiting trends in the field of social media include the growing relevance of Instagram stories, the ongoing importance of LinkedIn and the potential of so-called ‘passive candidates’.
The employer branding opportunities on Instagram are endless (we explain some examples here) and can be a vital component of your talent acquisition. According to a study conducted by Iconosquare, the rise of Instagram stories, however, has led to a decrease in regular post engagement. This means that the active use Instagram stories is becoming a crucial tool for employer branding and recruiting, especially to avoid missing out on followers, engagement and (most importantly) potential new hires.

Artificial Intelligence: The new workhorse
A current global LinkedIn survey of over 8.800 talent acquisition professionals and hiring managers shows that 35% think that AI will have a major impact on the recruitment process in the upcoming years. But do we really understand how AI will affect the HR sector?
It is inevitable that AI will further strengthen its foothold in recruiting and will likely continue to take over certain aspects of your job. For example, there is already a software that automates candidate searches and quickly finds matches that fit your criteria. Chatbots can automatically respond to candidates to answer simple questions. And other technologies support you in scheduling candidates efficiently. In total, 58% of HR specialists think that AI will be helpful in terms of sourcing candidates.
However, it is very unlikely that the machines will take over all your responsibilities in 2018. More complex tasks such as interviewing candidates, judging the Cultural Fit or gauging candidates interpersonal skills cannot be fulfilled by AI. Paradoxically, the more we use technology, the more we also need to invest in the human side of the job. So, AI might be a huge step forward and is going to save us a lot of time but talent acquisition won’t become fully automated.
Reinvention of the interview: New tools, different focus
According to a current LinkedIn study, 56% of HR professionals and hiring managers say that new interview tools are the top trend impacting how they hire. That does not mean that traditional interview methods will disappear overnight. However, they have been proven to be less accurate and often misleading in reading the candidates. After all, attractive and charismatic interviewees aren’t necessarily more capable, but we unconsciously assume they are. The same survey, respondents stated that bias of interviewers as well as the limited abilities to assess a candidate’s soft skills and weaknesses are further disadvantages of traditional interviews. New techniques, including job auditions, casual and video interviews, will continue to improve this section of recruitment. In addition, measuring the compatibility of the candidates with the corporate culture before and during interviews will implement itself even further.
